With more than 10,000 participants expected, FanFest, the space of environmental activism in Romania is preparing new and unique activities for free spirits. The distinctly varied program which is continuously expanding will unfold during the three days of the festival with events that start at 10 o’clock in the morning and end late at night.
The activities prepared for the participants will span three thematic avenues - Say it Green, FanFest Art and FanFun. Designed as a meeting for environmental activists from all around the country, FanFest 2007 calls on you to become active - an activist and begin to create and act to protect nature. Be a free spirit, communicate, inform and share ideas with young people your age. The protection of the blue planet starts with you. Now!
Each year we choose a central environmental theme to present to the public. For this edition, FanFest brings to you the Cyanide Free Romania initiative. Cyanide-based mining is one of the dirtiest industries in the world. Among its long-term effects are the pollution of water streams and ground waters, the destruction of aquatic life in rivers and the poisoning of several species of birds. Chronic poisoning has a long-term impact on the reproduction and development of fish, and for a human being one spoon-full of a solution with only 2% cyanides in it can be fatal.
The Romanian Coalition to ban cyanide supports the legal proposal now under the consideration of the Romanian Parliament which was put forward by senators Peter Eckstein Kovacs and Gheorghe Funar. In September the Romanian Deputy Chamber will vote on this matter so anyone is invited to encourage the deputies to go and vote.
